Honda Displays Technological Innovations in Environment Protection & Mobility at IETF 2007

New Delhi, Feb 13: Honda Motor Company (HMC), one of the world's leading manufacturers of mobility products, today unveiled the company's latest technological innovations in producing environment-friendly fuels and advanced mobility at the 17th International Engineering & Technology Fair (IETF) 2007.

The IETF 2007, which is being held during the Indo-Japan Friendship Year, is of special significance to Honda, as it has had a long and fruitful relationship with India. Be it motorcycles, scooters, gen-sets or cars, Honda's USP in India has always been introduction of latest technologies that benefit the people.

In line with Honda's legacy of leading in the development of next-generation technologies, the theme of the Honda booth at this year's IETF is "On the Leading Edge". The exhibits on display at the IETF 2007 form the core of Honda's strengths globally. In India, Honda was the first company to showcase fuel cell and hybrid technologies at the Auto Expo last year.

The displays this time are: the latest generation fuel-cell car, the "FCX Concept", which is powered by a fuel-cell stack and releases only water vapour as exhaust; the Bio-ethanol technology, which produces automobile fuel from agricultural waste and also acts as a counter-measure to global warming; and the ultra-thin, user-friendly Solar panel which can be mass produced.

These technologies, which explore alternate sources of energy, have a special significance for India, where energy needs are increasing at the same pace as economic growth.

The ASIMO and the Honda Jet showcase Honda's strides in mobility, achieved after years of research and development. ASIMO is today a representation of Honda's Power of Dreams and a much-loved humanoid robot, which evokes delight and awe at the same time. With the Honda Jet, Honda has announced its presence in the skies. Though production of the jet will begin in 2010, Honda has already received 200 orders in the US.

Addressing the media at the IETF, Mr. M. Takedagawa, Operating Officer, Honda Motor Company, South West Asia, said, "As a responsible organization, we have a commitment to our future generations and we will use our technological edge to conserve energy and protect the environment by developing alternate resources of energy. It gives me great pleasure to showcase the development work being done in Honda. In May 2006, Honda announced global CO2 reduction goals - both for its products and production activities. We will follow the same in India."

Bio-ethanol
Honda, in association with Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE), has developed Bio-ethanol fuel, which is made from plant waste such as leaves, stalks of plants and rice straw. Bio-ethanol not just can be developed as the automobile fuel of the future, it is also environment-friendly. As it is carbon-neutral, it could be an effective means to combat global warming.

Honda already has experience in ethanol fuels. Honda introduced alcohol fuel-based motorcycles in the mid 1980s in Brazil. They introduced E22 (approximately 20-25% alcohol density) for automobiles soon after. In Late 2006, Honda launched FFV, Flex Fuel Vehicle (100% ethanol) technology in Brazil. All the Honda cars in India are compatible to E10 (ethanol blend of 10%) requirements

FCX Concept
The FCX Concept on display is the second-generation Fuel-cell car from Honda, which pioneered the fuel cell technology. A Fuel-cell vehicle is powered by an electric motor, running on electricity generated by a fuel-stack, which uses hydrogen as its energy source.

Already on the road and ahead of the pack, Honda's FCX fuel cell vehicle defines a new paradigm in mobility. The new FCX boasts a fuel cell system that delivers more power in less space, in a unique, low-floor fuel cell platform. It's a next-generation sedan with a low center of gravity and a full-sized cabin, offering the kind of driving pleasure and roomy interior previously unimaginable in a fuel cell vehicle. The FCX Concept also features Honda's advanced intelligent technologies that reduce driver burden, and the spacious interior allows for extra-large seats to maximize comfort.

Solar Panels
Honda Engineering, a Honda subsidiary, has developed next-generation solar cell panels that feature a light-absorbing layer formed by a compound made of copper, indium, gallium and selenium (CIGS). CIGS-based solar cells can utilize a wider wavelength region of sunlight for photoelectric transfer and also have a larger light absorption coefficient. As a result, they can convert solar energy into electricity more efficiently as compared to conventional crystal silicon solar cells.

HondaJet
HondaJet is an advanced light business jet that breaks new ground by offering a larger cabin and luggage space, far better fuel efficiency, and higher cruise speed compared to conventional aircraft in its class. HondaJet is transcending the standards in light jet travel, rethinking technology to maximize performance, comfort and quality. HondaJet introduces several key innovations that revolutionize aviation performance:

  • A patented over-the-wing engine mount design reduces drag at high speed to improve cruise efficiency.

  • An advanced all-composite fuselage structure lowers weight and manufacturing costs.

  • A compact, high-powered HF120 turbofan engine provides maximum performance with high fuel efficiency.

  • A natural-laminar flow (NLF) wing and NLF fuselage nose help achieve reduced drag


  • ASIMO
